5 Surprising Sources of Protein

Protein is something that everyone needs but often doesn’t get enough of. Proteins do most of the work in cells and are essential to the function, structure, and normality of the body’s tissues and organs.

Protein is important because it helps you stay healthy and helps your body work the way it should.

Typically, an adult should consume .36 grams of protein per pound of weight of their body. So, how do you make sure you’re getting enough? Here are five foods that have a lot of protein.

1. Sweet potatoes

While often thought of as just starch, it turns out that sweet potatoes have both proteins and starch. There are 4 g of protein in one cup of baked sweet potatoes.

The great thing about sweet potatoes as you can use them to cook multiple different meals. Also, they are sweet! This means instead of wasting calories and sugars on cake and cookies, these give you just enough sugar to make you feel satisfied after a meal.

2. Veggie burgers

For those who are plant-based, veggie burgers are a great choice as far as protein. One of the first things many non-meat eaters are asked is how do you get your protein? Luckily, there are many plant-based sources of protein for carnivores and herbivores alike.

Additionally, many of these burgers taste similar to a regular burger but are a much healthier option. There are so many different brands, too! Try one today and you’ll be surprised at how much you may like it.

3. Leafy greens

There’s a reason everyone suggests incorporating these into meals. They’re easy to cook with and offer 5g of protein per cooked cup. They make a great addition to any meal!

There are so many different types of greens, too. You really can’t go wrong, no matter what type you go with.

4. Whole wheat pasta

Not many people think pasta is considered healthy. However, whole-wheat pasta is full of protein! This can offer up to 7.5g of protein in one single cup. Whole wheat pasta is also delicious and can be found at any grocery store!

Ditch the white pasts and opt for whole wheat next time– it’s better for you and is just as (if not more) delicious!

5. Blackberries

Arguably the most surprising of all, blackberries are a very unexpected fruit chock-full of protein! In fact, one cup contains about 2g of it. While this may not seem like a lot, those who love blackberries know it’s easy to go through a few cups of sweet berries as you snack throughout the day.

Blackberries are the perfect addition to your toast in the morning or to top off your granola, yogurt, or to make a mixed berry smoothie!
